A computer rarely gets slower in the literal sense. The processor is doing exactly what it did on the first day. What changes is everything around it: more software running unasked, a drive with no room to work in, a cooling system full of dust, and an operating system doing more than it used to.
Which means most of the fix is maintenance rather than money. Here is what actually moves the needle, in rough order of how much difference it makes for the effort involved.
Give the drive room to breathe
A storage drive that is nearly full behaves badly. The operating system needs scratch space for temporary files, virtual memory, and updates, and solid-state drives in particular need free blocks to write efficiently. A machine running with a sliver of space left will feel sluggish in ways that look like a failing processor.
Aim to keep at least a tenth of the drive free, and more if you can. The space usually hides in four places: downloads nobody ever cleared out, old system backups, virtual machine or game files measured in tens of gigabytes, and duplicate photo libraries from two migrations ago. Most systems include a storage overview that sorts by size, which turns an afternoon of guessing into ten minutes of deleting.
Look at what starts when the machine does
Every application that installs a background helper, an updater, or a cloud sync agent adds to what loads before you touch anything. Individually, all small. Collectively, the reason a machine takes two minutes to become usable after logging in.
Both major desktop systems have a login-items or startup list. Open it and be unsentimental. If you do not use the program weekly, it does not need to launch itself. The same applies to browser extensions, which are software running on every page you open, and which accumulate the way kitchen drawers do.
While you are there, uninstall what you no longer use rather than leaving it. Not because a dormant program costs speed, but because every installed application is one more thing needing updates and one more piece of code with access to your files.
Clean out the dust, seriously
This is the maintenance task with the biggest gap between how much it helps and how often it gets done. A laptop pulls air through a small intake, and after a few years that intake and the fins behind it are packed with a felt of dust and hair. The fan spins faster, the machine gets hotter, and modern processors respond to heat by slowing themselves down. Your computer is not old. It is suffocating.
- Shut it down, unplug it, and take it somewhere you don't mind making a mess.
- Blow compressed air through the vents in short bursts, from the exhaust side toward the intake, holding the fan still with a toothpick so it cannot spin up and generate current.
- If the machine opens easily, take the bottom panel off and lift the dust mat off the heatsink fins by hand rather than blowing it deeper into the chassis.
- Check the rubber feet while you are underneath. Missing feet mean the machine sits flat on the desk with no air gap, which undoes the whole exercise.
Desktops need the same treatment and are far easier to open. Once a year is plenty in a normal house, twice if there are pets or a smoker.
The upgrades still worth doing

If the machine is stuck with soldered memory and already has a fast drive, the honest answer is that hardware upgrades are done and the remaining gains are in software and habits.
Know the date the machine actually expires
The real end of life for most computers and phones is not mechanical. It is the day the manufacturer stops issuing security updates. After that the device still works, and using it for email, banking, or anything else that matters becomes a bad idea, because newly discovered flaws will never be fixed.
Look up that date for what you own and put it in your calendar. It changes how you plan: a machine with four years of support left is worth putting memory into, and one with six months left is not. If the hardware is still good when support ends, a lightweight alternative operating system can often extend its life for browsing and documents, which is a genuinely useful second act for a laptop that has become a kitchen machine.
The rest is unremarkable and works: restart occasionally rather than closing the lid for six weeks, install updates rather than postponing them forever, keep liquids on a different surface, and carry it in something padded. Machines that last a long time are usually not special machines. They are ordinary ones that were never cooked, dropped, or filled to the last gigabyte.
